Nine workers were killed and 15 others injured after a boiler explosion at a power plant in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district on Tuesday, police said. According to preliminary information, the blast occurred in a boiler tube at the Vedanta Limited power plant located in Singhitarai village during the afternoon, Sakti Superintendent of Police Prafull Thakur said.
He said nine workers lost their lives in the incident, while 15 others sustained injuries. Three workers were killed on the spot, while the remaining victims succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
The injured have been admitted to hospitals in neighbouring Raigarh district. Following the incident, police and local administration teams rushed to the site and initiated rescue operations.
Officials said due to extremely high temperatures around the boiler unit, workers and staff have been evacuated from the affected area as a precautionary measure. Rescue operations are still underway to determine whether any other persons were trapped at the site.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai described the incident as ‘extremely tragic’ and said the state government stands in solidarity with the families of the deceased. He also assured that a detailed investigation will be conducted and strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
In an official statement, the plant management said the incident occurred at one of the boiler units at its Singhitarai facility involving personnel working under its subcontractor NTPC GE Power Services Limited, which is responsible for operating and maintaining the unit.
The company officials added that its immediate priority is to ensure proper medical treatment and assistance to all those affected. It also said it is coordinating closely with medical teams, local authorities and other stakeholders to manage the situation.
The management further stated that details are still being ascertained and a thorough investigation has been initiated in coordination with its partner organisation and relevant authorities to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
