Phase-1 of the Budget Session concluded on Friday. This was accompanied by a series of high-intensity clashes.

The stormy first half of the Budget Session concluded on Friday. This was accompanied by a series of high-intensity clashes over a controversial India-US trade deal and unauthorised extracts from the unpublished autobiography of former Army Chief MM Naravane. Following a heated period of disruptions, the Lok Sabha has adjourned and is scheduled to reconvene on March 9.

The mood between members remained quite tense during that session as the Opposition leader, Mallikarjun Kharge, demanded that those critical remarks regarding PM Modi's policies, which were deleted from his statement regarding the President’s Address, be reinstated. However, Chairman CP Radhakrishnan strongly disagreed with this demand and accused the Opposition party of trying to dictate terms to the Chairman, a comment supported by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, where she accused the Opposition Leader of trying to challenge his powers.

Adding to the procedural drama, Speaker Om Birla signalled he would not preside over House business until an Opposition notice for his removal is formally addressed, citing moral grounds according to sources.
