A five-day BRICS conference focusing on agriculture and food security began on Tuesday in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Held under India's BRICS Chairship, the event features a three-day Agriculture Working Group meeting followed by the 16th BRICS Agriculture Ministers' meeting on June 12 and 13.
In the significant five-day BRICS meeting officials are deliberating on crucial topics including food security, smart agriculture, and farmer welfare. This conference, held under India's chairmanship, will also see agriculture ministers convene. Discussions will cover agricultural trade, digital farming, and AI. A joint declaration is expected upon consensus.
Delegates from Brazil, Indonesia, China, Iran, South Africa, the UAE and other member countries are participating in the Summit. Agriculture Ministers, senior officials and experts from 21 countries are taking part in the Summit. Foreign delegates will also get a taste of Indore’s rich culture and heritage. They will visit historic sites like Rajwada, Chappan Dukan, Sarafa and Mandu.
Multiple sessions are scheduled to be held today. Key topics include food security, farm innovation, climate-friendly farming, agricultural trade and empowering small farmers. On the 12th of this month, a special dialogue among agriculture ministers will be held. It will focus on food security through small farmers, women and youth. On 13th June, the ministerial meeting of BRICS nations will take place.
The summit serves as a platform to address pressing global agricultural challenges and foster international cooperation. Key topics on the agenda include Food Security & Farmer Welfare, addressing malnutrition and improving the livelihoods of small cultivators, Smart & Climate-Resilient Agriculture, Strategies to combat erratic rainfall and temperature shifts, Integrating artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital solutions into farming practices.Global Trade, Facilitating agricultural trade and streamlining supply chains among member nations.Following official-level deliberations, ministers are expected to reach a consensus and issue a joint declaration.
The meeting, taking place in Indore, the economic capital of Madhya Pradesh and India's cleanest city, coincides with the state government's declaration of 2026 as the 'Year of Farmer Welfare'.
