Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday urged BRICS member countries to unite against terrorism, promote responsible use of artificial intelligence, and deepen economic cooperation as the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum concluded in Brasília.
He also confirmed that India will host the next edition of the summit.
Birla thanked the Brazilian Parliament, government, and people for hosting the gathering, calling the forum a platform for “meaningful dialogue” and “exchange of views” that will help strengthen parliamentary cooperation among the five member countries — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
“The BRICS nations had important discussions during the forum. We exchanged ideas and reaffirmed our shared commitment to parliamentary collaboration, responsible technology, and inclusive economic growth,” said Birla.
The final declaration adopted at the close of the forum strongly condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and underscored the importance of adopting a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism.
BRICS nations collectively emphasised the need for global cooperation to counter terror threats. Reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call, Birla stressed that “all countries must adopt a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism”.
Artificial intelligence was another key focus. The BRICS delegations acknowledged its necessity but called for its use to be guided by transparency and accountability. “There was a shared understanding that AI must be developed and deployed with responsibility,” Birla said.
The forum also explored ways to promote economic inclusion and intra-BRICS trade. Birla noted India’s consistent support for global cooperation, rule of law, and dialogue on international platforms. “We aim to advance economic partnerships and deliver inclusive growth for our people,” he said.
As India prepares to host the next BRICS Parliamentary Forum, Birla said the agenda will cover key global issues including AI, trade, and social development. He assured that India would ensure the summit is “successful and productive.”
In his closing remarks, Birla expressed confidence that the exchange of ideas and best practices among the BRICS nations would bring about meaningful improvements in people’s lives.
“Through these efforts, we can strengthen citizen engagement and make a real difference,” he said, extending his warm wishes to the Speakers and parliamentary leaders of all member countries.
