In the 2025-26 Union Budget, the government has allocated ₹123.75 cr for the expansion of the Supreme Court building. This move is part of an effort to meet the growing demands of India’s judicial system.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made the announcement during her budget speech, which outlined the allocation as part of the central sector project aimed at expanding the court’s infrastructure.
The Supreme Court, which plays a pivotal role in the country’s legal system, has been operating under immense pressure due to an increasing caseload. The building expansion is seen as a necessary step to ensure that the court can continue functioning efficiently and with the necessary resources.
This allocation represents a significant rise compared to the previous fiscal year, where Rs 46.63 crore had been set aside for the same purpose. The increase in funding indicates the government’s commitment to improving the judicial infrastructure and ensuring the smooth functioning of the court.
The expansion project will involve creating more space for courtrooms, offices, and other facilities within the Supreme Court complex. This will help accommodate more judges and support staff, facilitating quicker delivery of justice.
As the country’s judicial system continues to face challenges, this development is expected to contribute to reducing delays in case processing and enhancing overall efficiency.
