The Bundelkhand region in Uttar Pradesh has received its first Geographical Indication (GI) tag for a farm produce. The indigenous farm produce wheat, popularly known as Kathiya Gehu (wheat), has been conferred the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, said the authorities on Monday.

The Assistant General Manager of NABARD Jhansi, Bhupesh Pal, revealed that the prestigious GI certification was pursued through a joint effort. The application was filed by the local FPO, Khatiya Wheat Bangra Producer Company Limited, with support from NABARD and technical guidance from Padma Shri Rajnikant Rai, Director of Human Welfare Organisation in Varanasi, back in January 2022.

After a rigorous two-year process, the GI tag, designated with certificate number 585, was officially granted on March 30, 2024.

"This achievement marks a significant milestone for the Bundelkhand region, as it secures its first GI tag for a farm produce. This recognition will propel the promotion of Kathiya Gehu, renowned for its protein richness and minimal irrigation requirements," stated Pal.

S.K. Chaturvedi, the Director of Research at Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University (RLBCAU), emphasized the nutritional and environmental benefits of Kathiya wheat, also known as Durum wheat, which flourishes in the region. Chaturvedi highlighted its gluten-free nature and resilience to harsh climatic conditions, requiring minimal water for cultivation.

"With the official confirmation of the GI tag for Kathiya, its brand value is set to soar, benefiting the region's farmers. RLBCAU, in collaboration with the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), has embarked on extensive research to develop superior seed varieties, aimed at boosting production," Chaturvedi remarked.
