The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a bonus equivalent to 78 days’ wages for eligible railway employees. The decision will benefit 11,40,770 staff members, with the total payout estimated at Rs 2,009.61 crore.
The payment is intended for non-gazetted railway employees. An eligible employee can receive a maximum bonus of Rs 17,951 for the 78-day period.
Employees covered under the bonus
The approved bonus will cover a broad group of railway personnel, including track maintainers, loco pilots, train managers or guards, station masters, supervisors, technicians, technician helpers, pointsmen, ministerial staff and other Group ‘C’ employees.
The approval traditionally comes ahead of the Durga Puja and Dussehra holiday period, when railway employees await the annual bonus decision.
The Cabinet described the payment as recognition of the strong performance of railway staff. It is also intended to encourage employees to sustain and further improve the performance of the Railways.
During 2025-26, the Railways loaded a record 1,670 million tonnes of cargo and carried nearly 7.41 billion passengers.
