The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the construction of a six-lane, access-controlled Capital Region Ring Road in Odisha for ₹8,307.74 crore.
The project, to be developed on hybrid annuity mode, will cover a length of 110.875 kilometres and serve as the Bhubaneswar Bypass. It will link three major National Highways — NH-55, NH-57 and NH-655 — as well as State Highway 65, providing seamless connectivity to economic, social and logistics hubs across the state.
Officials said the project is expected to generate about 74.43 lakh person-days of direct employment and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment, creating new opportunities for growth and development in the surrounding areas.
The upgraded corridor will strengthen multi-modal integration by connecting with 10 economic nodes, four social nodes and five logistics nodes.
It will also link to a major railway station, an airport, a proposed multi-modal logistics park and two major ports, boosting faster movement of goods and passengers across the region, according to the statement.
Currently, travel between Rameshwar and Tangi along the existing National Highway is often congested due to heavy traffic through the highly urbanised centres of Khordha, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

To ease this pressure, the Cabinet has proposed the development of a greenfield highway with six access-controlled lanes.
The road is expected to provide significant benefits for Odisha and neighbouring eastern states by diverting heavy commercial vehicles away from Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Khordha, officials said.
The project is aimed at improving freight efficiency, reducing logistics costs and driving socio-economic progress in the region.
“Upon completion, the bypass will play a pivotal role in regional economic growth, strengthening connectivity between major religious and economic centres, and opening new avenues for trade and industrial development,” the Cabinet statement said.
