The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued a summons to Sheikh Sirajuddin, the brother of arrested and suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh, in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged land grabbing in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali.
Sirajuddin, believed to have played a pivotal role in the purported scam, is currently absconding, according to CBI sources.
The agency has summoned him to appear before its officers on May 6 at their Kolkata office regarding the land grab case.
Despite a search conducted at Sirajuddin's residence by CBI officials, he was not found.
However, a 'summons' notice was affixed to his residence by the investigating team before their departure.
Additionally, another team of CBI officers visited the 'Shajahan Market' in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas district, where they interacted with several shopkeepers believed to have close ties to Shajahan.
These individuals are suspected of involvement in the alleged scam, and the officers engaged them as part of their investigation.
The CBI's scrutiny of Sandeshkhali has intensified, with officers making regular visits to the area as part of their probe into the alleged land grabbing.
The investigation was triggered earlier this month following a Calcutta High Court directive, which mandated a CBI inquiry into allegations of crimes against women and forcible land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.
The court has demanded a comprehensive report from the CBI regarding these matters.
The scrutiny of Sandeshkhali gained momentum after Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials encountered hostility on January 5 while attempting to conduct searches at Shajahan Sheikh's premises.
The incident occurred amid investigations into a ration distribution scam allegedly involving Shajahan.
