A 10-member squad from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) reached Sandeshkhali in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Saturday, intensifying investigations into purported crimes against women and incidents of land-grabbing, a senior official informed.

Dividing their efforts, the CBI contingent diligently visited residences in the Sundarikhali area of Sandeshkhali, engaging with victims individually to meticulously document their grievances, the official disclosed.

Simultaneously, another segment of the team convened at Sandeshkhali Police Station, where they engaged in discussions with local law enforcement officers to gather crucial insights pertinent to the ongoing investigation.

"Our presence in Sandeshkhali aims to facilitate dialogue with local villagers regarding reported crimes against women and instances of land encroachment. We are meticulously recording their assertions," conveyed the official.

The recent intervention by the Calcutta High Court catalysed the CBI's involvement, following the court's directive for an extensive probe into allegations surrounding crimes against women and land-grabbing in Sandeshkhali.

The region had been mired in protests, echoing the collective outcry against these pressing issues.

In a decisive move, the court entrusted the CBI with the task of delving into the multifaceted allegations and presenting a comprehensive report, underscoring the urgency and gravity of the matter at hand.

The tumultuous landscape of Sandeshkhali bore witness to heightened tensions earlier this year when Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials encountered hostility on January 5.

The officials faced a belligerent mob while executing a search operation at the premises of Shajahan Sheikh, a now-suspended Trinamool Congress leader, in connection with an alleged ration distribution scam.
