CDS Gen Chauhan reveals guide to cyber warfare

This pivotal move aims to streamline and enhance the effectiveness of operations in the critical domain of cyberspace.

CDS Gen Anil Chauhan with Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari and Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi release the Joint Doctrine for Cyberspace Operations, in New Delhi.

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on Tuesday unveiled a comprehensive joint doctrine for conducting Indian Armed Forces by the Indian Armed Forces.

This pivotal move aims to streamline and enhance the effectiveness of operations in the critical domain of cyberspace.

The newly released doctrine highlights the importance of understanding the military aspects of cyberspace operations, providing conceptual guidance to the military for planning and achieving strategic objectives in this domain.

The doctrine's release comes as the government looks to strengthen its military capabilities through the rollout of theatre commands.

The defence ministry highlighted the necessity of integrating cyberspace operations into the national security framework.

This integration will help define the 'ends', 'ways', and 'means' to create strategic advantages and influence events across all operational environments and instruments of power.

General Chauhan introduced the 'Joint Doctrine for Cyberspace Operations' during a Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) meeting. The defence ministry underscored that this doctrine would guide commanders in navigating the complex military operating environment of today's cyberspace.

The ministry described the unveiling of the joint doctrine as a crucial step towards achieving "jointness and integration," a concept actively pursued by the Indian Armed Forces.

In addition to traditional domains of warfare—land, sea, and air—cyberspace has emerged as a critical and challenging new arena.

Unlike the territorial limits that define land, sea, and air domains, cyberspace is a global common, characterised by shared sovereignty.

Hostile actions in cyberspace can significantly impact a nation's economy, societal cohesion, political decision-making, and defence capabilities.

The doctrine aims to raise awareness and provide guidance on cyberspace operations, ensuring that military personnel at all levels understand the strategic importance and operational intricacies of this domain.

It also seeks to dovetail cyberspace operations into the broader national security fabric, ensuring a cohesive and comprehensive approach to national defence.

The defence ministry reiterated the significance of cyberspace and the need for a robust policy to link it to national security objectives.
