Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar To Visit J-K For Poll Review On August 8th.

The Election Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and SS Sandhu, will visit Jammu and Kashmir from August 8-10 to review the preparedness for the upcoming assembly elections in the Union Territory.

The visit aims to ensure that the region is fully prepared for a smooth and fair electoral process. In Srinagar, the Commission will first meet with political parties. These discussions are crucial as they provide a platform for the political stakeholders to voice their concerns and suggestions regarding the election process.

Following these meetings, the Commission will hold discussions with key administrative figures, including the CEO, SPNO, and the Central Forces coordinator, to review the logistical and security preparations for the elections.

Additionally, the Commission will engage with the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police (DGP), District Election Officers, and Superintendents of Police from all districts.

These meetings are intended to ensure that all aspects of the election process, from voter registration to the deployment of security forces, are thoroughly reviewed and any potential issues are addressed promptly.

On August 10, the Commission will visit Jammu for a review meeting with enforcement agencies. These meetings are crucial for ensuring that all enforcement mechanisms are in place to prevent any electoral malpractices and to maintain law and order during the election period. Following this, the Commission will hold a press conference in Jammu to brief the media on their findings and the overall preparedness for the elections.

In March 2024, CEC Rajiv Kumar, the only member of the three-member commission to visit the Union Territory before the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, had assured political parties and the people of Jammu and Kashmir that the Commission would soon hold the assembly elections in the UT. This visit underscores the Commission's commitment to ensuring a democratic process in the region.

Following the record turnout in the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 and the significant participation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the democratic process, CEC Kumar highlighted the positive impact of this engagement. He noted, “This active participation is a huge positive for assembly elections to be held soon so that the democratic process continues to thrive in the Union Territory.”

The Election Commission of India has indicated that assembly elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir before September 30, which is the deadline set by the Supreme Court.

To facilitate a fair electoral process, the poll body has asked the Jammu and Kashmir administration to transfer officials posted in their home districts and those connected with the election process who will be completing a three-year tenure on or before September 30. This measure aims to prevent any potential conflicts of interest and to ensure that the election process is conducted impartially.

The upcoming visit by the Election Commission is a critical step in the lead-up to the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. By engaging with political parties, administrative officials, and enforcement agencies, the Commission aims to ensure a comprehensive review of the election preparedness, thereby reinforcing the democratic process in the Union Territory.

The people of Jammu and Kashmir can look forward to participating in a fair and transparent electoral process, contributing to the ongoing democratic journey of the region.
