TSR to Add New Battalion After Centre Nod.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved the creation of a new battalion under the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), marking a significant step towards bolstering internal security and expanding employment opportunities in the northeastern state.

The decision follows a proposal submitted by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha during his recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.

Welcoming the Centre’s approval, Saha announced the development on social media, stating: “Big boost for Tripura! The Union Ministry of Home Affairs sanctions raising another India Reserve (IR) battalion for Tripura State Rifles, enhancing security and generating employment opportunities. Grateful to Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji and Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji.”

The Union government will provide a one-time financial assistance of ₹50 crore for establishing the new battalion. Of this, up to ₹30 crore has been earmarked specifically for infrastructure development, excluding land acquisition costs.

The remaining funds will support other requirements for raising and equipping the battalion, subject to submission and verification of expenditure details.

According to the terms of the sanction, the newly raised TSR battalion will be designated as an India Reserve (IR) unit, giving the central government the “right of first call”. This provision enables the MHA to deploy the battalion anywhere in India whenever required, in line with national security priorities.

Formed under the Tripura State Rifles Act, 1983, the TSR was officially raised on 12 March 1984, with the primary objective of tackling insurgency and maintaining law and order in the state. Over the years, the TSR has evolved into a versatile force capable of both state and central deployments.

Tripura currently has 14 active TSR battalions, most of which operate as IR battalions under the directive of the MHA. The force presently includes 21,798 personnel who play a critical role in maintaining peace and stability across the state.

The addition of a new battalion is expected to further strengthen Tripura’s security infrastructure while creating substantial employment opportunities for local youth. The move aligns with the Centre’s broader vision of inclusive development and regional empowerment.
