A protest was held by resident doctors at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh on Monday, in response to the rape and murder of a fellow doctor in Kolkata. The doctors, who halted elective services but continued emergency services, demanded a CBI probe and strict punishment for the perpetrator.
The incident, described as a "heinous crime" by Dr Praneeth Reddy, joint secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), PGIMER, occurred on Thursday night at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, where the semi-naked body of a 32-year-old female doctor was found in the seminar hall.
"Our demand is a CBI probe into the matter," said Reddy.
The protest, part of a nationwide indefinite strike called by the Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA), saw doctors raise slogans of "we want justice" and demand a speedy and transparent investigation, as well as maximum punishment for the culprit. They also called for ensuring doctors' safety.
