Chhattisgarh has recorded 1,301 cybercrime cases in the last one-and-a-half years, with victims losing more than Rs 107 crore, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma told the state assembly on Wednesday.
Replying during Question Hour to BJP MLA Sunil Soni, who raised concerns about the growing number of online frauds, Sharma, who also holds the Home portfolio, said police have so far recovered Rs 3.69 crore and refunded it to victims in 107 cases.
Soni asked for details of cybercrime cases registered in the state from January 2024 to June 2025 and questioned what measures were in place to tackle the surge. He warned that thousands were being defrauded and some victims had been driven to suicide.
In his reply, Sharma said one State Cyber Police Station and five Range Cyber Police Stations were currently operational, with cyber cells active at the district level. Approval for dedicated cyber police stations had been granted for some districts, he added.
A Cyber Forensic Lab equipped with modern tools is functional at the Police Headquarters in Raipur for examining digital evidence collected during investigations.
Sharma said police officers and staff are being regularly trained on complex areas like the dark web and cryptocurrency through institutions including C-DAC and the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy.
Under the Union Home Ministry’s Cyber Commando Scheme, a gazetted officer and five other officials from the state have recently received specialised training. SIM cards and IMEI numbers linked to cyber crimes are also being blocked, he added.
To curb cyber crimes, extensive public awareness drives are being held at both the police headquarters and district levels. The state operates the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) to allow victims to lodge complaints quickly.
Sharma said the Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930 runs around the clock through a modern call centre. Trained police staff coordinate with bank, e-wallet and payment gateway nodal officers to freeze suspicious transactions and facilitate refunds.
He added that refunds in registered cybercrime cases are processed according to court directions.
Responding to a separate question from BJP MLA Gajendra Yadav, Sharma said 67,389 people in the state have lodged online fraud complaints worth Rs 791 crore on the NCRP portal from 2023 to June 2025.
Of these, 21,195 complaints have been resolved and the money of 1,820 victims has been recovered and returned, he said.
