CID questions Abhishek Banerjee, Ghosh in signature forgery case

Kunal Ghosh, the Beleghata MLA, has also been called in regarding the same matter. According to sources, investigators may conduct a face-to-face interrogation of the two leaders or record their statements separately, particularly in light of the controversy surrounding alleged forged signatures of MLAs on a meeting resolution.

CID summoned Abhishek Banerjee and Kunal Ghosh in the Assembly signature forgery case as multiple probes deepen legal pressure on the TMC leader.

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) summoned Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and party MLA Kunal Ghosh to Bhawani Bhawan on Sunday in connection with the alleged forgery of signatures in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Banerjee, the MP from Diamond Harbour, had already faced an extensive interrogation lasting nearly five and a half hours last Thursday in relation to the same case. Despite that lengthy interrogation,  CID issued a fresh notice, directing him to appear again on June 14, indicating that the investigation is intensifying. Banerjee arrived at CID’s headquarters around 11.50 pm.

Meanwhile, Banerjee’s legal challenges have further escalated with another development emerging late Friday night. While he is appearing on Sunday for the forgery probe, he has also received a separate summons in connection with a case filed over allegedly provocative remarks made during a Lok Sabha election rally, where references to playing “DJ music” triggered controversy. He has been asked to appear before the CID again on June 16 for questioning in that case.

In addition to these developments, a fresh FIR has reportedly been lodged against Banerjee over alleged irregularities in the distribution of relief funds following Cyclone Amphan in 2020. The case involves accusations of corruption amounting to approximately Rs 250 crore, further compounding his legal troubles.

With multiple investigations unfolding simultaneously—including the Assembly signature forgery case, the election speech controversy, and the Amphan relief scam—the pressure on the TMC leader has intensified significantly.
