Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently called a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in order to address the rising economic and strategic challenges being posed by the conflict in Iran. The CCS, being the highest decision-making authority in the nation on matters of safety, undertook an exhaustive analysis of the energy and food security challenges facing the nation, specifically in relation to how the public can be protected from the global challenges being triggered by the war in West Asia. Highlighting the evolving nature of the crisis, the Prime Minister emphasised that every possible measure must be taken to shield Indian citizens from its ripple effects.
The committee decided to sustain strong coal reserves at power plants nationwide to prevent any interruption of electricity services. Moreover, the government is working to find ways to diversify the sources of importation of the petrochemical, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries, to ensure that these critical industries are not hindered by their reliance on one region.
The CCS outlined plans to secure a steady supply of fertilisers for the farming community, including a search for alternative international suppliers to compensate for any shortfalls. Writing on the social media platform X, Mr Modi confirmed that the talks covered short, medium, and long-term strategies, ranging from safeguarding agricultural inputs to identifying new export destinations for Indian goods.
During the session, the Cabinet Secretary delivered a comprehensive presentation on the global landscape and the specific risks facing various sectors, including shipping, trade, and the MSME industry. In response, the Prime Minister has directed the formation of a special group of ministers and secretaries entrusted with the duty of monitoring the situation in the Middle East and its impact on the nation’s macro-economic environment. The meeting has been attended by senior ministers, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
