Chief Justice of India Surya Kant took strong objection to a false casteist statement attributed to him by certain social media handles, and warned that strict action would be taken against those propagating such “vile, brazen and mischievous” posts.
“To manufacture a fictitious quote and attribute it to the highest judicial office of the country is an act of utter dishonesty, deliberate social provocation, and contempt for constitutional values,” CJI Surya Kant said.“Such irresponsible conduct undermines the very foundation of public confidence in the judiciary and the rule of law,” the CJI added. The CJI condemned certain social media posts, and specifically by an X account named @UnreservedMERIT.
According to the statement, the account falsely attributed to him the following remark, originally in Hindi: “If a society, even after producing IAS, IPS, CJI, President and PM from among its people, still chooses to remain exploited, then the fault lies not with the Brahmins but with its own mentality. These claims are entirely baseless, malicious and patently false,” the CJI said in a statement.
“The Office of the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India urges all responsible citizens, media organisations and social media platforms to refrain from sharing or amplifying false and fabricated content,” the CJI' statement added. The CJI said that such false remarks do not reflect his views and character, and warned that the "full might of the law" will fall upon those propagating such fake remarks.
The post, shared on X by the account @UnreservedMERIT, carried a quote in Hindi reading: "अगर एक समाज ख़ुद को IAS, IPS, CJI, President, PM बनकर भी ख़ुद को शोषित ही रखना चाहता है, तो इसमें गलती ब्राह्मणों की नहीं बल्कि उसकी अपनी मानसिकता की है।" It was accompanied by a photograph of the Chief Justice and the caption "Chief Justice of India."CJI Surya Kant categorically denied making any such statement.
"These assertions, which have been fraudulently attributed to me, are entirely baseless and do not reflect my words, views, or character," he said, adding that he "categorically condemned the dissemination of such fabrications."He urged the public to verify sources before lending credence to such claims and warned of legal consequences for the perpetrators."I am prepared to bring the full might of the law to bear on the perpetrators and ensure that they face the repercussions of their mendacity," the Chief Justice added.
