On Thursday, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud highlighted the significance of liberty and freedom during an Independence Day event in the national capital.
Reflecting on India's choice of freedom over uncertainty in 1950, the CJI drew a stark comparison to current events in Bangladesh, underscoring how crucial and fragile liberty is.
CJI Chandrachud spoke about the importance of honouring the values of the constitution and the duties we owe to one another and the nation. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by freedom fighters who contributed to India's independence and the establishment of a robust judicial system.
The Chief Justice mentioned notable figures like Babasaheb Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and others who left their legal careers to join the freedom struggle.
During his speech, CJI Chandrachud also reflected on the broader implications of freedom and liberty, emphasising that these concepts should not be taken for granted.
He pointed out how the challenges faced by ordinary citizens in their daily lives are mirrored in the work of the judiciary. The Supreme Court, he noted, sees a diverse range of litigants from various backgrounds seeking justice, which underscores the importance of a fair and inclusive legal system.
The Chief Justice also discussed the evolving role of the judiciary in ensuring access and inclusivity. He stressed the need for a modern judiciary that is both accessible and efficient, enabling lawyers to serve their clients effectively and fostering a sense of responsibility towards the judicial institution.
