Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud revealed that he sought divine intervention during deliberations on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute. Speaking to residents of his hometown, Pune, on Sunday, the CJI shared his personal reflections on the landmark case.
Recalling the three months he spent deliberating over the Ayodhya dispute, CJI Chandrachud said, "Very often we have cases (to adjudicate), but we don’t arrive at a solution. Something similar happened during the Ayodhya (Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute) which was in front of me for three months."
He further added, "I sat before the deity and told him he needs to find a solution." Stressing the power of faith, he said, "Believe me, if you have faith, God will always find a way."
The Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case, which lasted for decades, was finally resolved by a Supreme Court verdict on November 9, 2019.
The ruling allowed the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site while assigning a separate plot for a mosque.
CJI Chandrachud, who was part of the five-judge bench that delivered the verdict, had visited the Ram Temple in Ayodhya in July this year to offer prayers, following the idol consecration ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January.
