Leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, along with several volunteers, were detained by the Delhi Police after entering the Jantar Mantar area to stage a protest on Tuesday morning.
The action came a day after the Centre removed Jantar Mantar’s status as a designated protest site. A video shared by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke showed party volunteers climbing an iron gate and a police barricade while carrying flags and shouting slogans.
In the footage, Das and Ranka were seen leading the group into the area. Police personnel stationed at the site pursued the protesters and attempted to stop them as they raised “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Inquilab Zindabad” slogans. The protesters were subsequently taken into custody.
“You cannot denotify the resistance,” Dipke said in a post reacting to the action. He also claimed that the removal of Jantar Mantar as a designated protest venue would lead to the emergence of similar protest spaces across the country.
Dipke said the decision reflected the Prime Minister’s fear of protests and argued that demonstrations would not stop merely because Jantar Mantar was no longer an authorised site. He said “Jantar Mantars” would now come up across the country.
Jantar Mantar, located in the high-security central Delhi area, had served as a designated venue for protests and sit-ins. Following recommendations from a committee constituted under the Union Home Ministry, three alternative locations have been finalised in the national capital.
- Ramlila Ground
- Burari Ground
- CBD Ground in east Delhi
The decision came as the Opposition bloc INDIA and the CJP held protests in central Delhi over the controversy surrounding Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Since October 10, the Delhi Police has fortified Jantar Mantar and has not permitted protesters to enter the area. The CJP had issued a call for a demonstration there on the same day.
Dipke, Das and Ranka were detained inside their flight after arriving in Delhi on the morning of October 10. Thousands of protesters were detained over Saturday and Sunday as protests and police action continued across the streets of the national capital.
