Police detained people travelling towards Jantar Mantar on the morning of the proposed Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest and took them to Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium. The action was aimed at preventing supporters from reaching the protest venue for the party’s demonstration over alleged electoral irregularities.
Visuals showed protesters being placed in police vans in areas including Connaught Place, near Jantar Mantar. Another video showed several protesters inside a van while surrounded by police personnel.
CPI(M) MP John Brittas and former Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan were among those detained at the stadium. In a video from the venue, Brittas alleged that the police were behaving without basic courtesy.
CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das had been taken into preventive custody after arriving in the national capital by flight in the morning. Around 400 protesters were also detained overnight.
The party had called for a large gathering at Jantar Mantar to protest alleged irregularities in voter registration and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The CJP has also been seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh.
Delhi Police had denied permission for the demonstration, citing the late intimation given to the authorities. At least 45 metro stations were shut, while more than 200 trains were cancelled as security measures were put in place to restrict the expected turnout.
The police action followed concerns about a repeat of the disruption witnessed during a CJP protest on July 20. That demonstration had sought the resignation of then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over examination paper leaks. Pradhan later resigned, and the government accepted the protesters’ demands.
The CJP emerged from a viral movement and has received backing from several opposition outfits. The overnight detentions, transport restrictions and preventive custody of senior leaders were part of preparations to avoid a large-scale gathering and possible disruption in the capital.
