Bihar cabinet nod for 35 percent women’s job reservation.

In a significant move that could benefit the women of the State, the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government on July 8 approved 35 per cent reservation in all the government jobs 'only for women hailing from Bihar'.

With a cabinet nod, the State government has implemented a domicile policy in women's reservation quota for government jobs. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the State cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, which also cleared 43 other decisions.

Along with this the most important move for women’s empowerment ahead of the Assembly elections, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday announced that 35 pc of all state government jobs will be reserved for women who are permanent residents of Bihar.

The state cabinet also approved the formation of a new statutory body, the Bihar Youth Commission.

The decision, which was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister in Patna, is part of the government’s wider effort to increase women’s representation across all categories, levels, and departments of public service in the state.

“Thirty-five per cent reservation exclusively for women candidates who are original residents of Bihar in direct recruitment to all categories, levels, and types of posts in all state government services,” Kumar said.

Writing on social media platform X, the Chief Minister noted that the move was aimed at ensuring more women enter the workforce and play a greater role in governance and administration.

Alongside the jobs quota, Kumar announced the creation of the Bihar Youth Commission, which he said would be dedicated to empowering the state’s young population through better employment opportunities, skill development, and policy guidance.

“I am pleased to inform you that to provide more employment opportunities to Bihar's youth, train them, and make them empowered and capable, the government has decided to constitute the Bihar Youth Commission. The cabinet has given its nod for this today,” Kumar stated.

The Commission will act as an advisory body to the state government on youth-related matters. It will work in coordination with government departments to improve access to education and employment for Bihar’s young people.

The body will be composed of a chairperson, two vice-chairpersons, and seven members, all under the age of 45.

It will also be responsible for ensuring that local youth are prioritised for private sector jobs within Bihar, while also safeguarding the interests of students and workers from Bihar who live or work outside the state.

Additionally, the Youth Commission will design programmes to counteract social issues such as alcohol and substance abuse, and submit recommendations to the government on related policy matters.
