Patna Metro Launch Marks New Era in Urban Transport.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will inaugurate the city’s first operational metro route on Monday, marking a major milestone in the long-awaited Patna Metro project.

The initial 4.5-kilometre stretch, running from the Patliputra Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) to Bhootnath Station via Zero Mile, forms part of the Red Line corridor and represents the start of metro services in the state capital.

In addition to the elevated Red Line, an underground corridor is also being developed. During the inauguration, the Chief Minister is expected to lay the foundation stone for a 9.35-kilometre tunnel segment linking Patna Junction to Rukunpura, an extension that will enhance the network’s reach and connectivity.

The launch is a landmark step for Patna’s urban mobility, promising to ease traffic congestion and provide an eco-friendly transport alternative. The Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited (PMRCL), in collaboration with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), has completed all necessary preparations for the rollout.

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) recently granted operational clearance following a series of successful trial runs.

The first trial involved a three-coach train operating on an 800-metre track inside the depot to test key technical and safety parameters. Subsequent extended trials on the full route assessed aspects such as speed, braking systems, power supply, and overall performance.

The corridor will connect several key locations, including Bhootnath Road, Khemni Chak, and Zero Mile. Each coach can carry around 300 passengers, enabling a total capacity of roughly 900 passengers per trip, ensuring efficient service during peak commuting hours.

A distinctive feature of the Patna Metro is its integration of Bihar’s rich cultural heritage into modern design.

The coaches are adorned with vibrant Madhubani artwork and illustrations of iconic landmarks such as the Golghar, Mahabodhi Temple, Buddha Stupa, and the ancient Nalanda ruins — creating a visual connection between tradition and progress.

Once operational, the Patna Metro will offer a zero-emission, high-capacity transport system aimed at decongesting the city’s roads and providing a faster, cleaner mode of travel for thousands of daily commuters.

The project signifies a key advancement in Bihar’s infrastructure development, positioning Patna alongside other major Indian cities with a modern metro network while preserving its cultural identity.
