The Congress party on Wednesday organised a 'Mahadharna' at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to seek the Centre's urgent passage of Telangana's outstanding bills with a view to increase reservation for Backwards Classes (BCs) to 42 per cent in education, jobs, and local body polls.
The protest, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Telangana Pradesh Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud, saw the active involvement of Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka and state ministers, MLAs and BC organisation’s representatives from all over the nation.
The protest is part of the party's overall attempt to pressurise the Union government into putting the bills in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.
The leaders of INDIA bloc allies such as Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Shiv Sena (UBT), Nationalist Congress Party (SP), and Samajwadi Party have offered support.

CM Revanth Reddy has also sought an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu on August 7 in order to directly present the matter. If the request is denied, the Congress has announced plans to rally at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
BC Welfare Association National President Jajula Srinivasa Goud pledged complete support to the Congress, stating that there would be more protests if the bills are not tabled in this session.
MP of Congress Mallu Ravi hoped for a Presidential appointment and criticised Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader KT Rama Rao, saying the party, since it did not keep poll promises, needed to be derecognised.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar has severely criticised the Congress party's protest, calling it an attempt to seek Muslim reservations in the name of BC rights.
Sanjay accused Congress of planning to provide 10 per cent reservation to Muslims and deceptively bringing it as a 5 per cent boost for BCs. Sanjay also questioned Congress's track record on BC empowerment, questioning why BC was not promoted as Prime Minister or Chief Minister throughout the decades of Congress rule.
Sanjay pointed out that only the BJP has really empowered BCs, getting a BC Prime Minister, 27 Union Ministers, and several state Chief Ministers. He claims to support only a genuine 42 per cent BC reservation and not any communal quota disguised as BC.
