Almost 97,000 offenders have been convicted in Uttar Pradesh under CM Yogi Adityanath's 'Operation Conviction', a drive which began back in July 2023 to speed up the prosecution of serious offenders, including the judicial proceedings.

The project, aimed at a change in the state's law & order policy, not just emphasising arrests but also guaranteeing speedy and swift convictions by fast-tracking judicial processes.

The campaign has resulted in the conviction of 97,158 people between July 2023 and mid-June 2025, as per a press release by the Chief Minister's Office.

Additional Director General (Prosecution) Deepesh Juneja pointed out that among 1,14,029 cases identified for prosecution, 74,388 were disposed of, and convictions were obtained in 69,422 of them.
The numbers are being interpreted as a reflection of the Yogi government's zero-tolerance policy towards crime.

Under the initiative, 68 people have been sentenced to death and 8,172 to life imprisonment. A further 1,453 received sentences exceeding 20 years, while 87,465 were given prison terms of up to 20 years.

The campaign has specifically targeted organised crime and mafia activity. Of the 69 mafia elements identified, 29 have been convicted. Additionally, 395 individuals have been convicted in 272 high-profile cases involving the top 10 most-wanted criminals in the state.

Notably, Operation Conviction has also produced results in cases involving crimes against children.
Under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 17 individuals have been handed the death penalty – including three in a single month – and 619 received life sentences. Among the 68 total death sentences awarded so far, 17 were under the POCSO Act, 48 in cases of heinous crimes, and three under the Anti-Conversion Law (ACL) Act.

The campaign’s impact is visible in its daily statistics. On average, 143 identified cases are being resolved and 187 individuals convicted each working day, according to state officials.

The Yogi government has described the operation as a landmark initiative in making Uttar Pradesh safer and more secure.
