Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the significant decline in tuberculosis (TB) cases across India, attributing the achievement to the nation’s “dedicated and innovative efforts.”

Modi expressed confidence in eradicating TB through a united and “collective spirit.”

The Prime Minister's remarks followed Health Minister J P Nadda’s post highlighting India’s “remarkable” progress in combating tuberculosis, which has been acknowledged by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Nadda reported a 17.7 per cent drop in TB incidence in India between 2015 and 2023, a rate more than double the global reduction of 8.3 per cent.

In his message on X, Modi wrote, “Commendable progress! The decline in TB incidence is an outcome of India's dedicated and innovative efforts. Through a collective spirit, we will keep working towards a TB-free India.”

Nadda further credited Modi’s “visionary leadership” for bolstering the National TB Elimination Programme.

“Under the visionary leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi ji, our government has expanded and strengthened the National TB Elimination Programme by taking key initiatives such as the Ni-Kshay Poshan Yojana to provide essential nutritional support to TB patients, and introduction of the BPALM regimen, a novel treatment for Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis,” Nadda stated.

The Health Minister also commended the tireless work of healthcare personnel across the nation, noting their “unwavering commitment” to eliminating TB.

“I also acknowledge the tireless efforts of the Health Ministry's dedicated healthcare workers, whose unwavering commitment and hard work play a crucial role in this fight against tuberculosis,” he added.

India’s continued efforts to eliminate TB have included a range of programmes to support affected communities, from nutritional aid to advanced treatment options, with the goal of making the country TB-free.
