Commander Chowpoo becomes Arunachal’s first to lead naval warship
Commander Ronie Chowpoo, a communications specialist from Arunachal Pradesh, has become the first officer from his state to command a frontline warship in the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet.

Commander Ronie Chowpoo, a communications and electronic‑warfare specialist from Arunachal Pradesh’s Namsai district, has taken charge of a frontline warship in the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet, making him the first officer from the north‑eastern state to do so.
The Navy announced the appointment on Saturday, calling it a “deeply inspiring” milestone that honours Commander Chowpoo’s “exceptional service, professional excellence and deep commitment to national defence”.
Commissioned into the Executive Branch in 2008, Commander Chowpoo has served on guided‑missile destroyers, frigates and other major platforms, and has held key operational and staff posts at Naval and Fleet Headquarters. An alumnus of the Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun, and the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he is widely regarded as one of the service’s most accomplished young officers.
Officials remarked on the symbolism of “a son of the Land of the Rising Sun” commanding a warship in the Navy’s so‑called “Sunrise Fleet”, adding: “This is a proud moment not just for Commander Chowpoo’s family but for the entire state of Arunachal Pradesh.”
Congratulatory messages have poured in from across military and civilian circles, with many hailing his ascent as a beacon for young north‑eastern aspirants seeking careers in the armed forces.
Hailing Commander Ronie Chowpoo’s historic appointment, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said the officer’s journey “from the serene hills of our frontier state to the high seas of national defence is nothing short of extraordinary.”
In a social media post, Khandu described the naval officer from Nalong village in Namsai district as “a shining example of discipline, dedication, and unwavering service to the nation,” calling his achievement a matter of immense pride for the state.
