The Congress Central Election Committee (CEC) is meeting at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi to finalise strategies for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. The meeting is being attended by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

The key focus of the meeting is on nine seats that will be contested in the first phase of the elections. Sources indicate that candidates have already been finalised for five of these seats.

The discussions come ahead of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, which are set to be held in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1. The results are expected to be announced on October 4.

On August 22, the Congress and the National Conference (NC) formally announced a pre-poll alliance. This development follows a recent meeting between Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge with NC leaders Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah in Srinagar. Abdullah confirmed that the alliance partners will contest all 90 assembly seats together.

This new alliance marks a significant development, as the Congress and the NC had previously formed a partnership during the Lok Sabha elections. During those elections, the NC won seats in Anantnag and Srinagar, while the Congress did not secure any seats.

The Election Commission has issued notifications for the first phase of the assembly elections, which will cover 24 seats. This election will be the first assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370, marking a crucial moment for the region's political landscape.
