Cong pulls down ‘headless’ Modi poster after internal rift

The Congress party has deleted a controversial ‘headless’ poster targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi from its official X handle following a backlash from the BJP and discontent within its own leadership, with senior functionaries directing social media head Supriya Shrinate to remove the post and avoid deviation from party lines.

The headless poster of PM Modi shared on X, which has now been deleted, after internal objections and BJP allegations of echoing enemy narratives following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack.

The Congress party on Tuesday deleted a controversial social media post featuring a headless image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, amid internal criticism and political uproar.

The graphic, posted on X with the word ‘gayab’ and the caption “Disappears at the time of responsibility,” was intended to target the Prime Minister for his absence from an all-party meeting following the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.

The BJP condemned the post, accusing the Congress of mirroring hostile narratives.

“It wouldn't be wrong to describe the Congress as ‘Lashkar-e-Pakistan Congress’,” BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said at a press briefing. He called the post “disgraceful” and alleged it was done at the behest of Rahul Gandhi.

Congress sources confirmed that the party’s top leadership was displeased with the post. Social media head Supriya Shrinate was reportedly asked to remove the graphic and reprimanded for approving material that strayed from the party line.

“The top leadership of the Congress party expressed strong displeasure with the media department,” a senior party functionary said, adding the post had placed the party on the defensive and projected it negatively.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh had earlier questioned the Prime Minister’s absence. “Although the Prime Minister returned (cutting short his visit to Saudi Arabia) on April 24 (when the meeting was held), he left for Bihar to address a rally. He has time for giving election speeches, but doesn’t he have time or interest for the all-party meeting?”

The Pahalgam attack, which claimed the lives of 26 security personnel, prompted the Centre to call for a political consensus. The Congress has since questioned the Prime Minister’s lack of participation in the meeting, but the controversial poster appears to have triggered more harm than gain within the party’s ranks.
