Cong calls nationwide protest on Aug 22 for SEBI chief's resignation, JPC probe

Cong to protest on Aug 22 for SEBI chief’s resignation

The move comes in response to Hindenburg Research’s August 10 allegations, which claim that SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband, Dhaval Buch, were linked to offshore funds implicated in the Adani money siphoning scandal.

The Congress party has announced plans for a nationwide agitation on August 22, demanding the resignation of SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Adani issue, amidst ongoing controversy over the Hindenburg allegations.

The decision follows a meeting led by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge with senior party officials, where discussions centred on upcoming assembly polls and national issues.

Kharge criticised the alleged connection between SEBI and the Adani Group, asserting that the investments of small stock market investors must be protected.

"The shocking revelations of a nexus between SEBI and Adani need a thorough investigation. The Modi government must immediately seek the resignation of the SEBI chairperson and constitute a JPC," Kharge said in a statement on X.

The move comes in response to Hindenburg Research’s August 10 allegations, which claim that SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband, Dhaval Buch, were linked to offshore funds implicated in the Adani money siphoning scandal.

The allegations have intensified political tensions, with Congress and other INDIA bloc parties demanding action, while the BJP accuses the opposition of attempting to destabilise India’s financial system.

Buch and her husband have dismissed the charges as unfounded, alleging that Hindenburg Research is undermining SEBI's credibility and attacking its chief instead of addressing a showcause notice for "violations in India."

SEBI has stated that the Adani Group allegations were thoroughly investigated, with Buch recusing herself from any matters that could pose a conflict of interest. The Adani Group has described the allegations as malicious and misleading, affirming that there is no commercial relationship with Buch or her husband.
