A day after Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya criticized Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed for her now-deleted post fat-shaming Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma, Mohamed responded by highlighting an old tweet from BJP MP Kangana Ranaut.
Mohamed Questions BJP’s Silence on Kangana's Remarks
Shama Mohamed pointed out that in 2021, Kangana Ranaut had posted a now-deleted tweet attacking Rohit Sharma over his stance on the farmers' protests. She questioned why Mandaviya and his party had remained silent back then.
Sharing a screenshot of Ranaut’s deleted tweet, Mohamed wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "What does @mansukhmandviya have to say to @KanganaTeam? #JustAsking."
During the farmers’ protests in 2021, Rohit Sharma had posted a message emphasizing the importance of farmers and the need for a peaceful solution. In response, Kangana Ranaut had used derogatory language against him.
Now, Mohamed is questioning why BJP leaders, who are criticising her, did not speak up when Ranaut made offensive remarks about the cricketer.
BJP's response to Mohamed’s comments on Rohit Sharma
On Monday, Mandaviya led the BJP’s criticism of Mohamed’s “fat for a sportsman” comment. He called her remarks “deeply shameful and pathetic.”
The controversy erupted after Mohamed tweeted that Rohit Sharma “needs to lose weight” and called him “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had.” She further wrote: “What is so world-class about him compared to his predecessors? He is a mediocre captain and a mediocre player who got lucky to be the captain of India.”
Her remarks came as Sharma was leading the Indian team in the ongoing Champions Trophy. However, the comments sparked widespread criticism, including from leaders within the Congress party. Following backlash, the party asked Mohamed to delete her post immediately.
