Congress rallies behind farmer protests, demands legal guarantee for MSP

Party President Mallikarjun Kharge pledges unwavering support for farmers' rights, vows to prioritise MSP assurance in manifesto.

The Congress leadership on Wednesday reaffirmed its unwavering support for the ongoing farmers' agitation, echoing demands for a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Party President Mallikarjun Kharge declared, "We fully back the farmers and their legitimate demands. Including MSP assurance in our manifesto and securing a legal guarantee are both priorities."

Kharge further stressed the need for MSP coverage for crucial crops, even if full inclusion isn't possible. He criticized the BJP government, stating, "Five years ago, the Prime Minister promised farmers double MSP. Now, they face neglect and failed negotiations."

Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari echoed similar sentiments, reminding everyone of the Prime Minister's 2014 election promise: "Why deprive farmers of their rightful profits?" He highlighted the nationwide protests and failed talks with the government.

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP for neglecting the MS Swaminathan report's recommendations.

He questioned, "Why begrudge farmers a small investment while forgiving corporate loans and tax cuts?" He emphasised how MSP assurance would boost rural demand, empower farmers, and drive GDP growth.

Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda expressed the government's willingness to discuss all issues raised by farmers.

Meetings with farmer leaders are ongoing, involving ministers like Piyush Goyal and Nityanand Rai.

Despite clashes with security forces, including tear gas and water cannons, farmer leaders remain resolute.

General Secretary of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Sarwan Singh Pandher, reiterated the demand for MSP legal guarantee and vowed a peaceful approach.

He clarified that only leaders will march to Delhi in the resumed "Dilli Chalo" protest.

After failed negotiations, farmers resumed their march on Wednesday morning, following the rejection of the government's MSP purchase plan.
