The Congress party has strongly condemned the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for attempting to politicise Operation Sindoor, emphasising that the military operation was carried out by India’s armed forces and should not be claimed by any political party for credit.
Senior Congress leaders, including several members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), held a meeting in Delhi to discuss recent developments. During the meeting, the party expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the soldiers, officers, and civilians who lost their lives in the recent violence in Poonch. In a resolution, the CWC stated, “The nation stands united in grief and resolve. The Indian armed forces have always defended the sovereignty and integrity of our country with unmatched bravery.” The Congress reiterated its full support for the armed forces.
The resolution also raised serious concerns over the terror attack in Pahalgam, calling it a major security lapse. Despite clear threats and heightened tensions in the region, the terrorists managed to carry out a deadly assault, raising questions about intelligence and preparedness. The party pointed out that no accountability had yet been fixed and demanded that those responsible for the attack be captured and prosecuted without delay.
The Congress further demanded an explanation from the government regarding the failure to prevent the attack despite prior warnings. It criticised the government for turning national security into a public relations exercise instead of addressing it with professional seriousness and institutional responsibility.
The CWC also expressed surprise at the sudden ceasefire between India and Pakistan following retaliatory strikes. It questioned the abrupt end to military action and the lack of official communication, which has led to public speculation. Of particular concern was U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that the ceasefire had been brokered using trade threats against India. The Congress condemned the Modi government’s silence on this issue, calling it "inexplicable and unacceptable."

The resolution underscored that successive Indian governments have always maintained that Kashmir is a bilateral matter between India and Pakistan. It criticised the Modi government for failing to challenge President Trump’s statement, which, the Congress said, effectively internationalised the issue and undermined India’s long-standing position. The party warned that this amounts to a dangerous and unprecedented “hyphenation” of India and Pakistan, damaging India's global standing.
In addition, the CWC strongly denounced a senior BJP minister’s derogatory remarks toward a senior female Army officer. Calling the statement disgraceful, the Congress demanded the minister’s immediate resignation and urged the government to take strict legal action.
The Congress reiterated demands made earlier by party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi for an immediate all-party meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as a special session of Parliament. The party emphasized that in times of national crisis, the government must show transparency and include the opposition in decision-making. “Unity, openness, and dialogue are not weaknesses—they are the foundation of effective governance,” the resolution stated.

The Congress also took aim at the BJP for attempting to turn Operation Sindoor into a partisan event. It noted that despite repeatedly advocating for national unity since April 22, the Prime Minister had convened a meeting only with NDA Chief Ministers on April 25, excluding opposition leaders. This move, the Congress said, is a clear attempt to politicise the military operation.
The party questioned why the Prime Minister has yet to attend a single all-party meeting, stating that such a gathering involving all state Chief Ministers, regardless of political affiliation, should have been held in the national interest.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Pawan Khera announced that the party would be organising "Jai Hind" rallies in multiple cities to express solidarity with the armed forces and protest the politicization of national security.
Jairam Ramesh criticised the silence of the Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister on President Trump’s repeated claims about brokering the ceasefire. “There is maximum silence on real issues and maximum politicisation of Operation Sindoor,” Ramesh said. He emphasised that Operation Sindoor belongs to the nation and the armed forces—not to any single political party.
Pawan Khera echoed these sentiments, strongly objecting to the way President Trump equated the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan. He said that the Prime Minister should have firmly denied Trump’s statement, even if with a single line in his national address. However, such a denial never came.
