Two days after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) passed a resolution on Thursday strongly condemning the attack. The party said the terrorists were intentionally targeting Hindus to create communal tension.
The CWC blamed the Union Home Ministry for a serious failure in security and intelligence. They pointed out that the attack happened on a route that usually has three levels of security, yet no security personnel were present on the Pahalgam-Baisaran trail at the time.
Mediapersons who visited the 5.5-kilometre path found no security presence along the stretch, which is only accessible on foot or by ponies.
The Congress party also paid tribute to Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a local pony ride operator who died trying to save the tourists. Shah tried to take a gun from one of the terrorists but was shot. He was the only earning member of his family and is survived by his elderly parents, wife, and children.
Eyewitnesses said around five terrorists in camouflage came out of the forest and opened fire on the tourists. In some cases, they asked the religion of the victims and targeted Hindus.
Earlier that day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the attack, saying those responsible would face punishment beyond their imagination. He said India would track down every terrorist and their supporters.
