A convicted murderer and member of the banned NLFT militant group staged a daring escape from Tripura's Central Jail in Sepahijala district on Tuesday.
Swarna Kumar Tripura, serving a life sentence for a murder in South Tripura's Santirbazar, vanished during the morning roll call.
Authorities immediately alerted all police stations and launched a massive search operation to apprehend the fugitive.
"The militant was sentenced to life imprisonment after he was found guilty in a murder case in South Tripura’s Santirbazar area and was lodged in the central jail. All the police stations were alerted after the incident. A massive search operation is underway to arrest the convict," he said.
This isn't Tripura's first brush with Tripura's escape artistry. Alarmingly, this is Swarna Kumar Tripura's third escape from custody. He previously fled the Central Jail in 2016 and Kanchanpur sub-jail in 2022.
Sepahijala Superintendent of Police, Bogati J. Reddy, visited the jail to assess the situation.
CCTV footage is being scrutinised alongside an investigation to determine how the escape occurred from the high-security facility.
A senior police officer suspects the escape took place in the early hours of Tuesday.
