Countdown to Maharashtra polls: Shiv Sena's first list sparks excitement

The Shiv Sena (UBT) is set to unveil its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra, with party leader Sanjay Raut announcing the development. Raut confirmed that the list, which will include 16 names, will be made public on Tuesday.

He emphasised the significance of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) within the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, stating that discussions regarding four seats are ongoing.

The political landscape in Maharashtra witnessed further activity as NCP (SCP) president Sharad Pawar visited the residence of Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. Reports suggest that discussions on seat sharing within the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance were held during this meeting at 'Matoshree', Thackeray's residence.

Adding to the political dynamics, senior Congress leader and Umred MLA Raju Parwe joined the Shiv Sena on Sunday, a move that strengthened the party's position. This development occurred in the presence of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.

The Mahayuti alliance received another boost with Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP) chief Mahadev Jankar's entry into the fold. Jankar joined the alliance in a ceremony attended by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CMs Ajit Pawar, and Devendra Fadnavis.

Maharashtra is gearing up for polling across five phases to elect representatives for its 48 constituencies in the upcoming general elections. As one of the significant contributors to the Lower House of Parliament, Maharashtra holds the second position, following Uttar Pradesh with 80 seats.

Reflecting on the previous Lok Sabha elections in 2019, the BJP emerged victorious in 23 out of 25 contested seats, while the undivided Shiv Sena secured 18 out of 23 seats it contested. The undivided NCP, part of the opposition alliance, contested 19 seats and secured victory in four. Following the split in 2022, the Shiv Sena realigned with the BJP, a move exemplified by Eknath Shinde's shift in allegiance.
