The Patiala House Court in Delhi has taken cognizance of a chargesheet filed against News Portal Newsclick PPK and its founder and Editor-in-Chief, Prabir Purkayastha, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
The charges stem from allegations of promoting pro-China propaganda and receiving substantial funds for it. The court has fixed May 31 for arguments on charges.
During the proceedings, Special Public Prosecutor Akhand Pratap Singh highlighted that two accused were arrested during raids, with one, Amit Chakraborty, seeking to become an approver.
The investigation involves eight protected witnesses, and cognizance is based on various statements, including those of the protected witnesses.
Previously, the Delhi Police informed the court about obtaining all required sanctions for prosecution under the UAPA and the CrPC. The chargesheet, consisting of nearly 8,000 pages with annexures, details the case against Newsclick and Prabir Purkayastha.
The allegations against Newsclick and its founder involve receiving significant funds for promoting pro-China propaganda. Amit Chakraborty, the Head of HR at Newsclick, has turned approver in the case.
Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakravarty were arrested under stringent provisions of the UAPA and IPC sections in October 2023. The FIR accuses them of illegally infusing foreign funds to disrupt India's sovereignty and territorial integrity, causing disaffection against the country and threatening its unity and security.
The FIR specifically mentions the People’s Dispatch Portal, owned by M/S PPK Newsclick Studio Pvt. Ltd., alleging it was used to peddle false narratives through paid news, facilitated by illegally routed foreign funds.
The case underscores the complexities of digital media and the legal challenges surrounding allegations of propaganda and foreign influence. As the legal proceedings unfold, the implications for press freedom and national security remain under scrutiny.
