The Congress Working Committee (CWC) members on Saturday unanimously urged Rahul Gandhi to assume the role of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. This request follows the party’s commendable performance in the general elections, attributed largely to Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatras.

At a press conference after the extended CWC meeting, party general secretary KC Venugopal announced that all members had unanimously asked Gandhi to take on the Leader of Opposition position.

"Rahul Gandhi said he would make a decision on it very soon," Venugopal added.

This marks a notable shift for the Congress, which has been without the Leader of the Opposition post since its defeat in 2014.

The party failed to secure the requisite 10 per cent of total seats in the Lok Sabha in both the 2014 and 2019 elections.

Venugopal highlighted the energised state of the party’s leaders and workers, asserting that the sentiment within the CWC is one of a renewed Congress on the path to revival.

The CWC adopted two key resolutions during the meeting.

The first resolution praised the leadership of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for the party’s improved performance in the Lok Sabha elections.

The second resolution credited the Bharat Jodo Yatras, led by Rahul Gandhi, for playing a pivotal role in the party's success.

The resolution further noted that the election results represented not just a political loss for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but a personal and moral defeat, given his direct appeal for a mandate.

With 99 seats, the Congress has emerged as the second-largest party in the Lok Sabha, a significant increase from the 52 seats it held following the 2019 elections.
