Dalai Lama greets Omar Abdullah on becoming CM of J&K

Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, on Thursday, congratulated Omar Abdullah on his appointment as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

 

“As I have mentioned before, I have had the privilege of knowing three generations of your family from the days of Sheikh Abdullah to you. I treasure our friendship.

 

"I wish you every success in meeting whatever challenges may lie ahead and the opportunities that arise to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir,” he wrote.

 

Abdullah on Wednesday took oath as the J&K CM, and in his very first people-friendly move, he announced there would be no “green corridors” for any VIP to reduce traffic congestion.

 

He also asked the police to make sure that minimum inconvenience is caused to the common people.

 

The National Conference leader was administered the oath of office and secrecy by the LG Manoj Sinha at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar.

 

Surinder Kumar, who defeated BJP UT chief Ravinder Raina in the Nowshera seat in Jammu, was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of the Union Territory along with other ministers.

 

Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other leaders of the INDIA bloc were also present for the swearing-in ceremony.

 

After taking the oath, Omar received a guard of honour at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar and held his first maiden meeting with secretaries of various departments.

 

One of his first acts as CM was to direct police officials to avoid the use of sticks and aggressive gestures at people walking.driving on roads.

 

He said he had asked his ministers to follow such instructions too.

 

This is the second stint of Omar as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, as he has already served as the chief minister of the erstwhile from 2009-2015.
