Walking the path of modernising the armed forces with the latest equipment, the Defence Ministry of India recently approved the procurement of indigenous UAV drones, according to media reports. The sources have revealed that there will be two separate production facilities, with two firms being assigned the manufacturing.

Defence Minister Rajanth Singh-led Defence Acquisition Council DAC approved the procurement of 87 indigenously manufactured Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones. These are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are designed to operate at medium altitudes—typically 10,000 to 30,000 feet—and stay airborne for 24 hours or even more.

Regarding the procurement, the defence ministry will soon convene a bidding process for the Indian manufacturers, followed by trials being conducted before the finalising the commercial negotiations.

DAC has decided to split the contract between the two companies with a ratio of 64:36. The primary contractor will ultimately get the larger portion.
