Delhi freezes at 3.2°C; IMD extends cold wave warning

Thursday was Delhi's coldest December day in three years, with the minimum temperature dipping to 4.5°C.

On Thursday, the minimum temperatures in Delhi’s Pusa and Ayangar areas dropped to 3.2°C and 3.8°C, respectively, with cold wave conditions reported, according to the regional meteorological center in New Delhi. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that cold wave conditions will continue at isolated places in parts of north India until the weekend.

 

The IMD explains that cold wave conditions occur when temperatures fall below 4.1°C, or when the temperature is more than 4.4°C below the average for that area.

 

Thursday was the coldest December day in Delhi in the past three years, with the overall minimum temperature reaching 4.5°C, which is 0.4°C below normal. The temperature had dropped from 4.9°C on Wednesday, and 5°C the day before. Last December, the lowest temperature recorded was 4.9°C on December 15, and in 2022 it was 5°C on December 26.

 

On Thursday, the maximum temperature in Delhi was 22.2°C, which is 0.8°C below normal, according to the IMD.

 

Weather Forecast for Delhi:

 

  • Friday: The IMD predicts a mainly clear sky with cold wave conditions at some places. The wind will be light (less than 8 km/h) from the northwest in the morning. There is a chance of smog or mist in the morning, which may continue into the evening. In the afternoon, wind speeds will pick up to 10-14 km/h, then drop again by evening.
  • Saturday: The weather will remain mainly clear with cold wave conditions at some places. Similar to Friday, light winds will start in the morning and gradually increase during the afternoon before easing in the evening. Smog or mist is expected in the morning and night.
  • Cold Wave Conditions Across North India: The IMD does not expect much change in minimum temperatures over Northwest and Central India in the next five days.
  • East India: A gradual drop of 2-3°C is expected over the next two days, followed by little change.
  • West India: Temperatures are likely to rise by 2-3°C over the next five days, except in Gujarat.


Cold wave conditions are expected in parts of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and other regions until mid-December. In areas like Haryana, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, cold wave conditions will last until December 15. Other regions like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi will experience cold wave conditions through December 16.

 

Other Weather Updates:

  • Dense fog is expected in parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, and some northeastern states until mid-December.
  • Ground frost may occur in isolated parts of Uttar Pradesh on December 12 and 13.
  • Overall, cold conditions are set to continue in many parts of North India, with Delhi facing cold wave conditions for the next few days.
