The Delhi government has taken urgent action amid the water scarcity crisis gripping the national capital. Seeking immediate relief, the government has moved to the Supreme Court to secure additional water from neighbouring Haryana.

In its plea, the Delhi government highlighted the severe water shortage faced by the people of Delhi, exacerbated by the scorching heat wave sweeping across North India, particularly in the national capital.

The soaring temperatures, with some areas witnessing record-high temperatures nearing 50 degrees Celsius, have led to an unprecedented surge in the demand for water in Delhi.

Consequently, the city is grappling with acute water scarcity, resulting in frequent supply disruptions and inconveniences for residents. Despite administrative efforts to optimise water distribution, the shortage persists, underscoring the urgent need for additional water supply.

To address this pressing issue, the Delhi government has proposed a solution involving the sharing of surplus water from Himachal Pradesh. However, since Himachal Pradesh does not share a direct boundary with Delhi, the cooperation of Haryana is vital for the transportation and release of this surplus water through existing channels.

Although Delhi has raised the issue with Haryana and requested the release of surplus water at the Wazirabad barrage, Haryana's response has been awaited. Through its petition, the Delhi government aims to expedite the resolution of the water crisis without attributing blame but rather seeking cooperation and a timely solution.

The plea emphasises that the request for additional water from Haryana is a temporary measure to address the current emergency and alleviate the ongoing water shortage in Delhi.

The immediate release of surplus water by Haryana is crucial to mitigate the adverse effects of the water crisis on the residents of the national capital.

As the Supreme Court considers Delhi's plea, hopes are pinned on swift action to ensure the uninterrupted supply of water and provide relief to the millions affected by the water scarcity in Delhi.
