In a significant step toward aiding the 1984 riot victims, Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, V.K. Saxena, announced a relaxation in educational qualifications for certain jobs on Friday.
This move allows survivors and their families, many of whom have faced years of hardship and limited support, to benefit from reduced job eligibility requirements, making employment opportunities more accessible.
With the LG’s approval, the minimum educational qualification for the Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) position has been lowered from 10th grade to 8th grade, expanding eligibility for a larger pool of candidates.
This change comes as a long-awaited relief to victims and families affected by the tragic events of 1984, where a particular community endured significant trauma and loss.
In his statement, LG Saxena emphasised the profound importance of this decision, acknowledging that the 1984 riots were a dark period for India, marked by violent acts against a minority group that severely violated human rights and democratic principles.
He highlighted the prolonged wait for relief among riot victims and stressed that this adjustment in employment criteria is grounded in humanitarian principles.
He directed relevant departments to look into providing employment opportunities for children of the elderly or deceased applicants, further aiming to support those families who have endured suffering for decades.
The LG's announcement came after years of procedural delays, red tape, and limited action to address the financial and social challenges faced by the affected families.
According to a press release from the LG's office, the change aims to bring practical assistance and justice to victims, acknowledging the depth of their trauma and helping to alleviate financial burdens.
The relaxation in educational qualifications has been recommended by the Revenue Department as part of a broader set of supportive measures for the riot-affected families.
The department initially proposed reducing educational requirements and allowing close relatives of original applicants to apply for MTS positions if the primary applicant was unable to.
However, the Delhi Chief Secretary recommended focusing solely on educational relaxation. In response, the LG urged a deeper evaluation, requesting the Services Department to assess and consider a one-time exemption in educational qualifications as a practical solution.
Following the LG’s instructions, the Services Department conducted an analysis and issued a document proposing a unique, one-time relaxation in educational qualifications for 1984 riot victims.
