North India continues to freeze

Gurugram recorded a low of 0.6 degrees Celsius, while the air quality index (AQI) in Delhi-NCR remained at a concerning 337 on Tuesday

Delhi woke up to a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius, even as foggy conditioned remained strong and the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) remained a matter of concern at 337, which falls in the “very poor” category


The national capital and parts of north India, including Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, continue to freeze, as the intensity of the cold wave increased on Tuesday. The minimum temperature dropped to as low as 0.5 degree Celsius in Gurugram.


Delhi woke up to a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius, even as the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) remained a matter of concern at 337, which falls in the “very poor” category. Foggy conditions continued to prevail as well.


Several parts of the capital city witnessed cold wave conditions on Sunday night, with minimum temperatures plunging close to the three-degree mark. Palam recorded a minimum temperature of 3.0 degrees Celsius, the lowest in several years, while Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius. The Ridge station recorded a minimum temperature of 3.7 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature there reached 18.8 degrees Celsius.

Bathinda in Punjab recorded a low of 0.6 degrees Celsius, while Fatehpur in Rajasthan’s Sikar district was at minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, according to the local meteorological departments. In Faridabad and Rewari, a layer of ice covered plants and windshields of cars. Chandigarh recorded a minimum temperature of 3.3 degrees Celsius. In Haryana, Narnaul was the second-coldest with a minimum temperature of 1.2 degrees Celsius.


The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that severe cold and foggy conditions will persist across North India in the coming days, and has advised children and the elderly to take necessary precautions. 


According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), several locations in the national capital continued to record AQI levels above 300 with Nehru Nagar reporting the pollution level at 358, Jahangirpuri at 357, Anand Vihar at 411 and RK Puram at 365. Patparganj recorded an AQI of 366, Wazirpur 375, Vivek Vihar 366, Siri Fort 342, Rohini 397, Okhla Phase 2 296, Chandni Chowk 380 and Dwarka Sector 8 384.


As per AQI classification, a reading between 0 and 50 is ‘good’, 51 to 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 to 200 ‘moderate’, 201 to 300 ‘poor’, 301 to 400 ‘very poor’ and 401 to 500 ‘severe’.
