The Delhi government on Friday issued a health advisory in response to fresh Covid-19 cases, instructing hospitals across the national capital to ensure adequate preparedness. This includes the availability of hospital beds, oxygen supplies, essential medicines, and vaccines.

Health Minister Pankaj Singh confirmed that 23 new Covid cases were recorded in Delhi. He added that authorities are currently verifying whether the individuals are residents of the city or had a recent travel history, which could explain the source of infection.

The advisory comes amid a surge in Covid-19 cases in several Asian countries, including China, Thailand, and Singapore. Citing these developments, Delhi’s health department emphasised proactive measures to ensure the city is ready for any potential spike in cases. As part of its response, the government has instructed all healthcare institutions to send every positive Covid-19 sample for genome sequencing to the Lok Nayak Hospital. This step is aimed at tracking any emerging variants of concern.

“Hospitals must ensure full preparedness, including functional availability of beds, oxygen supply, antibiotics, critical drugs, and vaccines. All medical equipment such as ventilators, Bi-PAP machines, oxygen concentrators, and PSA plants must be in working condition,” the advisory stated.

The Delhi Health Department has also mandated daily reporting of key health parameters on the Delhi State Health Data Management Portal.

Nationwide Covid-19 situation

Mild infections have recently been reported from multiple regions in India. As per the Union Health Ministry, a total of 257 Covid-19 cases were recorded across the country on Wednesday. State-wise figures include Maharashtra with 56 cases and Tamil Nadu with 66. Other affected states and territories include Puducherry, Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Haryana, Karnataka, and West Bengal.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George said on Friday that the state recorded 273 Covid-19 cases in May. Among the districts, Kottayam reported the highest count at 82 cases, followed by Thiruvananthapuram with 73, Ernakulam with 49, Pathanamthitta with 30, and Thrissur with 26.

In Haryana, four new cases were confirmed on Friday. All were reported as mild, with affected individuals placed under home observation. Health Minister Arti Singh Rao assured the public that there was no cause for panic, stating the state government is monitoring the situation closely.

On May 19, a high-level review meeting was convened to assess the recent uptick in Covid-19 cases. The meeting was chaired by the Director General of Health Services and included experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Emergency Medical Relief Division, Disaster Management Cell, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and central government hospitals.

According to officials cited by media reports, the meeting concluded that the Covid-19 situation in India remains well under control. As of May 19, 2025, the country had only 257 active cases, all of which were mild and required no hospitalisation.
