Panic rippled through several Delhi neighbourhoods on Monday morning after a fresh wave of bomb threat emails was sent to various schools, forcing emergency services into high gear. The alerts, which were first noticed shortly after 8 am, targeted a number of institutions, including the Army Public School in Delhi Cantonment, Salwan Public School, and Meera Public School in Janakpuri.
The emails, similar in nature to those that have plagued the capital over the past month, were immediately reported to the police and fire brigade. As soon as they arrived at the scene, teams from Delhi Fire Service, local police, Bomb Disposal Teams and dog units began searching.
Students and staff were evacuated by the authorities, who then conducted a full clean-up of the classrooms, play areas and admin buildings as a precaution. This latest scare follows a string of similar hoaxes over recent weeks that have targeted schools in Dwarka and Paschim Vihar, as well as high-profile locations like the Delhi Secretariat and Red Fort.
While the search operations are still being finalised, initial checks have yielded nothing suspicious, leading authorities to suspect another co-ordinated hoax. Cyber units of the police have been called to trace where they originated from. In many cases there have been threats made by people using VPNs or other forms of encrypted communications. Parents and students are already anxious due to ongoing examination periods. They are continuing to get threats of more violence and this only adds to their anxiety. The police claim that the locations are safe.
