The recent case involving the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has led to widespread outrage and significant developments both in West Bengal and across India.

Following an order from the Calcutta High Court, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team has arrived in Kolkata to take over the investigation of the case.

The CBI team, reportedly, includes a specialised medical and forensic team from Delhi. The court has instructed the Kolkata Police to immediately hand over all relevant documents to the CBI, indicating the seriousness and complexity of the case.

In response to the incident, doctors and medical students have expressed their anger and grief through protests. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has called for a nationwide shutdown of Outpatient Department (OPD) services starting Tuesday, showing solidarity with the victim and condemning the heinous act. A significant protest took place at AIIMS Delhi.

The National Medical Commission (NMC), under the direction of Union Health Minister JP Nadda, issued an advisory to all medical colleges and institutions, urging them to develop policies to ensure a safe working environment.

This includes measures such as enhanced security in OPDs, wards, hostels, and residential areas, installation of CCTV cameras, and improved lighting across campuses.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda met with a delegation from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), who called for a thorough investigation into the crime. They also discussed measures to enhance safety protocols for doctors, particularly women, in their workplaces.

The tragedy occurred on August 9, when the post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim's family has alleged that she was raped and murdered, adding to the gravity of the case.

This case has not only sparked a national outcry but also prompted calls for systemic changes to ensure the safety and protection of medical professionals, particularly women, in educational and healthcare institutions.

The ongoing CBI investigation and the involvement of national health authorities signal a comprehensive response to this tragic incident.
