An Indian national allegedly urinated on a fellow flyer on board a Delhi-Bangkok Air India flight on Wednesday, according to sources.
Though Air India in its official statement had confirmed an incident of unruly passenger behaviour, it did not share the nature of the incident.
The passenger on board flight AI 2336 was reportedly drunk and urinated on the managing director of a company, the sources added.
The incident has been reported to the authorities concerned, and the airlines offered to assist the "aggrieved passenger" in Bangkok and appropriate action will be taken against the unruly passenger, the sources further stated.
However, the "aggrieved passenger" declined the airlines’ assistance in taking up the matter with the authorities concerned after the flight landed in Bangkok, the airlines said in its statement.
Taking cognisance of the matter, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said officials would speak to the airlines.
"Whenever these kinds of incidents happen, the ministry takes note of them. They will speak to the airlines, and if there is any wrongdoing, we will take necessary action,” Kinjarapu said.
Air India in the statement said the cabin crew followed all laid down measures.
"... In addition to warning the unruly passenger, our crew offered to assist an aggrieved passenger to take up a grievance with the authorities in Bangkok, which was declined at the time. The standing independent committee will be convened to assess the incident and determine the action, if any, to be taken against the unruly passenger. Air India continues to follow the SOPs as laid out by DGCA in such matters," the airlines said, referring to standard operating procedure and the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
In the past two years, several incidents of passengers urinating on fellow flyers allegedly after consuming alcohol have been reported.
In March 2023, an Indian student at a US university, Arya Vohra, was banned by American Airlines after he allegedly urinated on a fellow flyer.
A drunk man allegedly urinated on an elderly woman in the business class of an Air India flight in November 2024.
