External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar has inaugurated the first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Mauritius during his two-day visit to the island nation. The launch underscores the robust cooperation between India and Mauritius, particularly in the crucial field of healthcare, as highlighted by the Ministry of External Affairs.
During his visit, EAM Jaishankar engaged in extensive discussions with Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth covering various facets of bilateral relations. These discussions encompassed development partnerships, defence and maritime cooperation, economic and trade relations, and fostering people-to-people connections.
"Delighted to inaugurate the first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Mauritius along with Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth," EAM Jaishankar shared on social media platform X. He emphasised that this initiative fulfils a commitment made earlier this year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Highlighting the India-Mauritius health partnership project, Jaishankar noted its role in providing cost-effective, Made-in-India medicines to bolster public healthcare and promote well-being in Mauritius.
Additionally, Prime Minister Jugnauth and EAM Jaishankar jointly inaugurated 12 community development projects supported by India, as well as a Mediclinic in Grand Bois, via virtual means.
During the visit, Jaishankar also conferred Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to the first two 7th-generation Mauritian citizens. Furthermore, he presented a royalty cheque under the bilateral MoU on sales of navigational charts, reflecting India's commitment to maritime cooperation.
"The visit of EAM underscores India's deep-seated regard for Mauritius as a cornerstone of India's Vision SAGAR and 'Neighbourhood First' policy," the ministry affirmed. It reaffirmed the enduring dedication of both nations to strengthening their multifaceted bilateral relationship and enhancing their close people-to-people bonds.
This initiative marks a significant step in India-Mauritius relations, reinforcing collaborative efforts in healthcare and developmental projects while nurturing enduring diplomatic ties.
